 Meaning of Educational Technology

(Meaning of Educational Technology) The word technology is derived from the Greek word 'Technikos'.  Which means 'an art'.  The word 'technology' in common language means 'craft' or 'art-science'.  Therefore, technology is related to skill and efficiency.  Due to the mechanization of the education process, a new concept and idea developed in the field of education, which has come to be called 'Educational Technology'.  In view of the subject of education, a new area 'Educational Technology' has been given.  Therefore, educational technology is the use of technology in education.

Educational technology was taken to mean the use of audio visual aids in education.  Even today, many people give the same meaning of educational technology, but this meaning of educational technology is not correct, because the use of audio-visual aids is definitely a part of educational technology, but audio-visual aids are not the complete meaning of educational technology.  In educational technology, the initial behavior, final behavior and processes of the student are analyzed from the point of view of system approach, whereas audio-visual devices are considered only as supporting means to generate learning.

Educational technology is that practical science which relates to the complete process of teaching and learning on the basis of individual differences and makes the process stronger, easier, natural and effective.  Due to the mechanization of the teaching process, educational technology has developed a lot.  Nowadays, teaching machines, cassettes, films, radio and television, tape recorders, computers and language laboratories are being used extensively in the teaching process.  A student sitting in a remote place can benefit from the use of all these things.  Through these, the knowledge of a teacher started becoming available to countless students because millions of people can hear and see the thoughts of a teacher on television or radio.  Educational technology has given all students the opportunity to learn through the use of 'computer-based instruction' and 'teaching machines'.  Computers have also helped a lot in research work.  This includes the development, use and evaluation of systems, techniques and teaching and learning materials in the field of teaching-learning.

Educational technology is such a technical or technical science, with the help of which the prescribed objectives of education can be achieved.  Along with determining the objectives, educational technology also selects and uses appropriate strategies to achieve them.  After strategizing, let us evaluate to what extent these 'objectives' have been achieved?  If these objectives have not been achieved, what kind of changes are needed to achieve them?  From a practical point of view, how to effectively transmit the process of teaching and learning for the proper and systematic development of the child's inherent powers in the direction of the set objectives or goals, is possible only through 'educational technology'.

In reality, 'Educational Technology' is the use of more and more scientific knowledge for overall planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of teaching and learning situations.  Education is the process of all-round development of the child and is the practical form of technical scientific knowledge.  Therefore, we can also say that in the field of education, the practical and scientific knowledge which is used for the all-round development of the child, is 'educational technology'.  In other words, developing the process of human learning through development, application, evaluation of systems, methods and supporting materials is 'Educational Technology' or Educational Technology.

Based on the above meaning and definitions of educational techniques, in short we can say that educational technology is an application of scientific knowledge based on psychological principles in the field of education, under which instruction or through machines is carried out.
